Diederik Veenendaal has been invited to join the Scientific Committee of the IASS Symposium, to be held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in July 2018, due to his expertise and standing in the field. The event is organized by Prof. Caitlin Mueller, Prof. John Ochsendorf, Bill Baker, Prof. Sigrid Adriaenssens and Prof. John Abel. The Scientific Committee helps to ensure the academic and intellectual quality of technical program of the symposium through a peer review of the abstracts and papers that are submitted.

The International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS), founded by Eduardo Torroja in 1959, supports the continuing development of design, analysis, and construction techniques of shell and spatial structures. The annually organized symposium is one means by which the IASS creates an interchange of ideas among all those interested in lightweight structural systems such as lattice, tension, membrane, and shell structures.

Less formally spoken, the symposium is simply a wonderful event to see the latest and greatest in lightweight structures, grab a coffee or a beer to catch up with an old friend or make a new one, and to see renowned engineers and professors in the wild.
